Mark Johnson, General Manager of Product & Distribution at Kobelco Construction Machinery Australia, described the XD Series as “an exciting evolution in Kobelco’s large heavy excavator product offering.”

“Designed to go the distance,” Johnson added that it sets “a new benchmark for machine durability and wear guarding in the 50-t class.”

“The new SK500XDLC-10 is the result of Kobelco’s continuous pursuit of being a leader in excavator design and durability – it’s engineered for the most extreme environments around the world,” he explained.

“It also builds on Kobelco’s excellent reputation for machine reliability, taking it to a new level by providing a factory-installed, comprehensive set of structural reinforcements – not to mention class-leading digging performance and fuel efficiency. The result is a machine that is the perfect choice for quarry work, infrastructure contractors and civil construction.”

EXTREME DURABILITY: A HEAVY-DUTY MACHINE

At first glance, it is fair to say that the SK500XDLC-10 is a hefty-looking, heavy-duty machine, capable of transforming operations on worksites – but, more importantly, it has the underlying robustness to back up these initial impressions.

The SK500XDLC-10 is built to get the job done in intense work environments, with a robust machine body complemented by additional reinforcements, positioned in all the primary areas of stress and wear across the boom, arm, underbody and undercarriage.

The heavy-duty boom and arm has been specially adapted to deal with the rigours of the harshest applications, with factory-fitted, triple-plated, hardened steel applied to all key structural sections, including the boom-to-arm connection, the boom centre and the end of the arm.

Further bolstering the SK500XDLC-10, a full-length rock guard is installed on the inside of the dipper arm, on top of additional steel plating.

Meanwhile, the SK500XDLC-10’s undercarriage is designed to deliver reliable performance and to withstand wear, with a heavy-duty steel bolted underbody guard protecting vital machine components and providing additional weight for greater stability.

The SK500XDLC-10’s undercarriage features a reinforced guide frame, preventing deformation caused by impact or loose stones, and reinforced 600mm triple grouser shoes, with the durability of the track links also having been increased, while the idler frame has double reinforcement plating inside and out.

POWER AND EFFICIENCY:  UNCOMPROMISING PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTIVITY

Power and efficiency are, of course, key considerations when tackling a variety of projects, and the SK500XDLC-10 delivers both in spades, with it running a 10.52L Hino turbo-charged liquid-cooled diesel engine, delivering 257kW of power, while its  advanced hydraulic system has been engineered to deliver uncompromising performance and productivity.

The hydraulic system’s direct-drive pump set is managed by Kobelco’s Intelligent Total Control System (ICTS), which combined with a standard extra auxiliary pump delivers a total flow of 800L/min.

The SK500XDLC-10’s bucket breakout force of 293kN, and slew torque of 183kN, produces fast digging cycle times, while tractive force of 415kN provides plenty of drawbar pull to climb stockpiles, along with speed when transiting, climbing slopes or negotiating rough terrain, even when lifting a heavy load.

In addition to this, the SK500XDLC-10 comes factory-equipped with bi-directional primary auxiliary hydraulics, and proportional hand-controlled tilt/rotate piping and quick hitch piping, with an in-cab pressure relief function simplifying tool changes.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, the SK500XDLC-10 delivers an average fuel consumption of under 30L/hr in typical Australian heavy digging conditions, with a new boom-to-arm regeneration system more efficiently controlling hydraulic fluid flow, resulting in less engine and hydraulic workload and contributing to higher fuel savings.

Operators have a choice of three work modes, comprising of heavy-duty and standard work options, along with an ECO-mode that automatically optimises digging efficiency, delivering a 13 per cent decrease in fuel consumption.

Meanwhile, a new hydraulically driven cooling package, with independently driven fans for the hydraulic cooler, engine radiator and intercooler, contributes to improving fuel economy and also reduces engine noise, while providing optimal oil temperature control.

OPERATOR COMFORT AND SAFETY:

A QUIET AND AIR-TIGHT WORK ENVIRONMENT

The SK500XDLC-10 sports a spacious cabin, with its expansive front window, a bonus for operators, delivering greater visibility, while a high level of pressurisation and noise dampening significantly ramps up the comfort factor, providing a quiet and air-tight work environment and keeping dust out.

The expanded cab also allows for smoother operator entry and exit, while a heated and air-cushioned, adjustable suspension seat protects against vibration, and an automatic climate control system, with vents optimally placed around the cabin, provides air flow directed towards the operator’s neck and back.

In addition to this, pilot hydraulic joysticks are designed to deliver low lever effort, while providing precision and control, helping to reduce operator fatigue.

Keeping operators up to speed, a colour LCD multi-display screen displays a range of information, including fuel consumption and maintenance intervals, along with the standard integrated rear-view camera, while the one-touch attachment mode switch uses icons to help operators confirm the proper configuration at a glance.

Helping to keep operations running smoothly, up to 20 preset attachment settings can be selected, while independently programmable settings for flow and pressure can accommodate a wide variety of attachments.

EASE OF MAINTENANCE:

SIMPLE DAILY CHECKS

Ease of maintenance is a key consideration in the design of the SK500XDLC-10, and operators will no doubt appreciate this focus, helping to keep it running in peak condition  from one day and one project to the next, resulting in extended fluid service intervals, easily accessed fluid filters, and a modern engine with the simplicity of no DPF to service and no requirement for AdBlue.

Kobelco’s fluid filtration systems are designed for reliability and to provide a superior hydraulic performance, reducing the risk of mechanical trouble and enhancing the SK500XDLC-10’s longevity, with the intelligent hydraulic system notifying the operator if filter performance is compromised.

The cabin multi-display screen’s Machine Information Display Function displays maintenance information that’s needed when it’s needed, with the self-diagnostic function providing early warning detection and display  of electrical system malfunctions, and the service-diagnostic function making it easier to check the status of the machine.

The SK500XDLC-10’s layout provides for simple daily checks, allowing easy access from the ground for many checks and regular maintenance tasks, including access to the radiator and cooling system elements, engine oil filter, pilot filter, pump drain filter and fuel filter with built-in water separator.

Meanwhile, the engine compartment contains ample space for a mechanic to undertake maintenance work inside, and the distance between steps is lower, allowing for easier entry and exit, with the hood lighter and easier to raise and lower.

In addition to this, Kobelco’s Geoscan system is provided free of charge for five years, allowing for remote access to machine operational and maintenance data, while Kobelco’s four years/6,000 hours extended major component warranty is included with all new XD Series machines.
