Currie Construction discusses the Mangapapa School Project featuring the SK270 Excavator
Currie Construction, a family-owned business, has been in operation since 1985, initially providing quality commercial building services to Gisborne and the wider Tairawhiti Region. In 2012 sons John and Sam Currie took over ownership, and in 2015 the business swiftly transitioned into the civil industry to keep up with the changing market demands. The choice to invest in Kobelco excavators for their challenging projects was influenced by Danny Drummond, a relative with expertise in using Kobelco excavators for demanding forestry road projects.
The decision to adopt short radius excavators was driven by the need for versatility and agility on construction sites. Despite their large size, the SK270 model in Currie Construction’s fleet exhibits impressive lifting power, navigating tight spaces with ease. These machines are equipped with customisable booms for various attachments, proving invaluable in projects like supporting old crib walls for Mangapapa School’s expansion in Gisborne.
The SK270, known for its engineering excellence, combines the benefits of a short radius design with enhanced vertical reach. Inspired by demolition excavators, Currie Construction’s team approached local company McCannic’s, to design and fabricate a quick hitch attachment, which then enabled multiple booms to be used on one excavator. These engineered custom hitches have optimized functionality, fostered local partnerships for seamless communication and support.
As the Mangapapa School project nears completion, Currie Construction is ready to leverage their equipment’s versatility for horizontal applications. The SK270 and SK140SRLC-7 excel in efficiency and control, with advanced features like customisable displays enhancing operational precision.
Expanding their fleet with the acquisition of 5.5-tonne, 8.5-tonne, SK135 models and SK380, Currie Construction enhances their ability to navigate intricate job sites. The addition of the SK140SRLC-7 highlights their commitment to innovation, with the SK270 excavator receiving praise for performance, leading to the acquisition of multiple excavators to meet demand.
In the ever-changing world of civil construction, Currie Construction stands out for their dedication to quality and innovation. With Kobelco excavators at the core of their operations, the future looks promising as they continue to set new industry standards and exceed expectations.
